Week 12: October 27, 2014

Dear Room 19 Families,

This is a busy week at Crooked Creek! We will continue with magazine sales and, bears and prizes! It is also Red Ribbon Week. Please promote Red Ribbon Week and Saying No to Drugs by having your student participate in this week's spirit week. Students in Room 19 will also be writing a 300 word essay this week, "A Drug Free Me". Below is the spirit wear fro each day. Please note, this is not like a Freaky Friday. All students can participate and do not have to pay a dollar! 
  • Monday: Wear Red
  • Tuesday: Wear Orange
  • Wednesday: Wacky Hat Day
  • Thursday: Mix Match Feet Day (shoes or socks)
  • Friday: Wacky Hair Day
Our learning this week continues with:
  • Reading-Unit 2, Lesson 9 in Journey's-Storm Warriors
    •  skill: drawing conclusions and making generalizations
    • strategy: predictions/inferences
    • word work focus: compound words
    • fluency skill: phrasing guided by punctuation
    • Friday: Stations Packet due
      •  Lesson 9 Quiz skill and vocabulary 
      • Next Friday is our Unit 2 Reading TEST-this is much larger than our weekly quizzes and includes all skills and strategies from Unit 2. 
    • Novel Assignment: DUE ON FRIDAY! Time management is key.
  • Social Science-  We will continue US History with Exploration of the New World. This will include Christopher Columbus' discovery, but many other important and influential explorers who first came to North America. We will be looking at maps and mapping route of early European explorers. 
    • We will also be observing the moon for the next for our new Science unit Sun, Moon, and Stars. 
  • Writing-Students will choose a research topic for his/her informational text on Monday. We will be focusing on asking "thick questions" to guide our research and how to pull out important information as we research. We will be working on this from now through December. Please ask your students questions about their writing weekly, check out his/her writing journal and be sure they are on track! 
  • Math- Unit 5: We will be reviewing  using LCM (least common multiple) to create equivalent fractions and GCF (greatest common factor) to simplify/reduce fractions (also finding equivalent fractions). Adding and subtracting fractions has many complex steps, so we will continue to review this week as well. To encourage number sense at home, share when you are using fractions (baking, eating a pie, cutting a sandwich, driving to school…fractions are everywhere and a part of our daily life.) Many students have been struggling to identify fractions as equal parts. Students can review these basic fraction skills on ixl fourth grade standards.

  • Next week: Unit 2 Reading Quiz, Fractions Adding and Subtracting Quiz

Week 11: October 19, 2014

Dear Room 19 Families,

I apologize for the late post! It has been a busy few days! 
have really been enjoying our parent teacher conferences. I am already seeing so much growth this year and am looking forward to continuing to work with each of you and your learner. Thank you for your continued support at home. Thank you for seeing what you can do to encourage growth and engagement with our curriculum, thank you for signing orange folders, assignment notebooks, reading logs and so much more! I believe being a parent is the most important job in the world and Room 19 has awesome parents supporting us! 
Our learning this week continues with:
  • Reading-Unit 2, Lesson 8 in Journey's-Everglades Forever
    •  skill: Author's Purpose
    • strategy: questioning
    • word work focus: homographs
    • fluency skill: rate-changing rate with purpose
    • Friday: Stations Packet due
      •  Lesson 8 Quiz skill and vocabulary
    • Novel Assignment Focus: Time management, fiction story, physical traits vs. personality traits, making predictions
  • Social Science- Our presentations for Native Americans were AMAZING!!!! WOW! What creative IB learners! We also had 20 students pass the Native Americans test with a C or better and had more A's and B's than any other letter grade on the test! OUTSTANDING! We will continue US History with Exploration of the New World. This will include Christopher Columbus' discovery, but many other important and influential explorers who first came to North America. 
  • Writing-We are beginning our new writing unit on Informational Text. Students will be working on this from now through December. We will work through this writing piece together as students choose a topic to research, learn research strategies, learn how to ask good research questions, how to write citations, and publish a final piece. 
  • Math- Unit 5: FRACTIONS! Fractions can be very challenging for students, but can be so much fun to work with! This week we will continue using LCM (least common multiple) to create equivalent fractions and GCF (greatest common factor) to simplify/reduce fractions. We will also be applying this knowledge to adding and subtracting decimals.
Assessments this Friday will consist of:
  • DMR Quiz
  • Fraction Number Sense Exit Ticket (We did not have this last week)
  • Lesson 8 Reading Quiz

Week 10: October 13, 2014

Dear Room 19 Families,

I cannot believe we are already starting Quarter 2. I hope everyone had a fun, relaxing Fall Break! It was wonderful to catch up on sleep, cleaning, and enjoy fall activities like apple pie and going to the pumpkin patch. 
I am looking forward to seeing all Room 19 Learners and their creative "Apps"! 
Our learning this week continues with:
  • Reading-Unit 2, Lesson 7 in Journey's-Old Yeller
    •  skill: Characterization-understanding characters based on words and actions. 
    • strategy: questioning
    • word work focus: idioms
    • fluency skill: informal language/intonation
    • Friday: Stations Packet due
      •  Lesson 7 Quiz with vocabulary
    • Novel Assignment Focus: Time management, fiction story, physical traits vs. personality traits, making predictions
  • Social Science- We are wrapping up our Unit on Culture and Native Americans. We will have a guest speaker from a village in the Northwest Region on Monday and review on Tuesday. Students should be ready to present on Wednesday (some will groups will present on Thursday) and test on Friday. 
  • Writing-This week we will be editing our informative paragraphs, adding text features, writing bibliographies and combining our individual paragraphs to make a book. It will be a busy week in writing!
  • Math- Unit 5: FRACTIONS! Fractions can be very challenging for students, but can be so much fun to work with! This week we will be looking at different representations of fractions (number lines, decimals, pictures, mixed numbers, improper fractions). Students will be able to use LCM (least common multiple) to create equivalent fractions and GCF (greatest common factor) to simplify/reduce fractions. 
Assessments this Friday will consist of:
  • DMR Quiz
  • Fraction Number Sense Exit Ticket
  • Lesson 7 Reading Quiz
  • Native American Test
Other Announcements for the Week:

  • Report Cards go home on Friday! Grades should not be a surprise if you've been checking Orange Folder weekly. 
  • I will be making phone calls this week to set up the reminder of parent teacher conferences. I am available this week and next before school every day, after school on Thursday and during my prep from 11:15-11:50. Our collaboration and communication is imperative for student success.
