Week 9: September 29, 2014

Dear Room 19 Families,

This Friday marks the end of Quarter 1! Students have really stepped up the last few weeks and applied themselves to the learning process. In Room 19 we remind ourselves daily that making mistakes is OK! If you are not trying you cannot make mistakes; so making mistakes is a good thing, as it helps us get closer and closer to our goals each time! Be patient with your learner. 5th grade is a tough transitions and I will continue to keep high expectations to help prepare your student for middle school. As students turn in larger projects and assignment, I will try to get all things back in a timely fashion, however Personal Narratives and Novel Assignments take a bit longer to grade as students had a month to complete them. Thank you, thank you for your continued support this year!
Our learning this week continues with:
  • Reading-Unit 2, Lesson 6 in Journey's-Tree Kangaroos
    •  skill: Cause and Effect
    • word work focus: synonyms and antonyms
    • fluency skill: pausing/expression
    • Friday: Stations Packet due
      •  Lesson 6 Quiz with vocabulary
  • Social Science- Our research is well underway and historians in Room 19 are learning so much about the first Americans. Each student has a note taking guide sheet where they are focusing on one aspect of culture for his/her region. This week, we will continue to research and learn about other regions as a whole class. Students will also start preparing to make their representation of their region on a planning template. Many students are eager to make posters to show what they have learned, however, we will be working outside the box and creating more in depth representations of our regions. I am also planning on having a special guest who grew up in a small village in the Northwest Region come and share with students. She has traditional drums, videos, and many traditions to share with students from her experience in the village.
  • Writing-Our next writing unit is expository. We will introduce expository writing this week and look at text features. All students will write one paragraph about his/her region to add to a group expository text on each Native American Region. Students must have and keep track of his/her flash drive.
    • (I am still missing 3 Personal Narratives due to lost flash drives. This is their grade and they have been given ample opportunity to retype and print.)
  • Math- Multiplying 3-digit by 2-digit with decimals and long division with decimals. Many students are still struggling with multiplying 2-digit by 3-digit whole numbers and long division whole numbers. Please continue to review these fourth grade skills at home using Math journal notes, ixl, moby math or having students create their own problems on graph paper, which is readily available in the classroom.
Assessments this week will consist of:
  • DMR Quiz-Friday
  • Math Unit 4 Quiz-multiplying and dividing decimals
  • Lesson 6 Reading Quiz
Other Announcements for the Week:

  • Chinese Guests arrive: Convocation 9am Monday morning
  • Dad's (or special guest) for lunch Wednesday 1:25pm.

Dear Room 19 Families,
We have started this week of learning off wonderfully! A few things we need to work on are, putting our first and last name, date and number on papers, specifically homework. We also need to ensure we are giving our best on all assignments, the big and the small. Some students, with homework, have been rushing through and not reading the text or the math problems. Homework is to reinforce skills we are learning at school. Furthermore, homework points can very quickly add up affecting grades.Thank you for always checking not only that homework is done, but is done well and correctly. Homework should take at least an hour every night. Thank you for your support with this matter at home.

Next week we will be using our stories to make personal narrative posters! Your writer will be asking for pictures to bring in to add to his/her poster!

Up and running: Our classroom library, Daily Math Fact Stations Practice, Math Stations (skills practice, review, and small group instruction), Reading Stations started today. With Reading Stations your reader will get a weekly stations packet. Students have approximately 15-20minutes for each station, if a station is not completed in class it should be finished at home so that it can still be turned in on Friday.
